GOETHE IN ILMENAU
When Goethe’s places of life and work are mentioned, Weimar, Frankfurt, Bad Lauchstädt, Wetzlar or Italy usually come to mind first. Yet these were not the only places that shaped his thinking and achievements. Ilmenau, too, was for decades an important place of his creative work –
Ilmenau, a place where Goethe worked, researched, wrote poetry, sketched and lived.
Between 1776 and 1831, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stayed in Ilmenau a total of 26 times. These stays were far more than mere visits – they were recurring phases of life and work. As an administrator, natural scientist, poet and observer, Goethe found inspiration, retreat and meaningful tasks here at the same time.
Ilmenau became a resonant space for his thinking and creative work.
